Ramadan Craft Fair by Sakeena Ahmed

Ramadan is such a special time for Muslims. Muslim children need to know how important and beautiful this month is for us, especially those living in the United States. The BIS Annual Ramadan Craft Fair began four years ago by some local moms who wanted to instill this love of Islam and Ramadan in their children. Each year has attracted more and more families and children, alhamdulillah. This year's event was held on Saturday, May 12 at the Hoover Crescent Islamic Center.

The craft fair is organized by several volunteers. This year we had six craft stations and two activities that the attendees could rotate through at their own pace. Children and moms (and some dads too!) made Ramadan lanterns, banners, balloons, and moon and star show pieces to decorate their homes. One of the more favorite stations was the Ramadan cookie decorating station. We also had a beanbag toss game and "Pin the Crescent on the Masjid" game as children made their way through the stations. This year, we included a "Blessings Bag" station where children put together a ziplock bag of toiletries and other essential items that were donated to a local homeless shelter.

Alhamdulillah it was a fun afternoon for all who attended. Local Muslim vendors also set up stalls selling books, gifts, games and decorations. One young community member was excited to set up a lemonade and popcorn stand, which was a popular stall for all to cool off with in the heat.

May Allah reward all the dedicated volunteers and parents who helped make this day special for the children. Several children look forward to this event each year and it really does get them excited for our blessed month ahead. If you are interested in helping out next year, please contact Sr. Sakeena (sakeena.ahmed@bisweb.org). We could always use a helping hand!
